Pacific Rim [Future Craft] 多摩美術大学×アートセンター・カレッジ・オブ・デザイン

Theme

Fture Craft

In this project, we focus on craft which embodies the aesthetic sense of Japanese culture and tradition, and examine the potential of future design inspired by the rich history of craft. Field trips to the Tohoku region, where traditional crafts still flourish, offer opportunities to be exposed to the art of making things, discover the creative power rooted in people¹s lives, and explore the expansion of design leading to the building of a new society. We will search for a value inherent in the spirit of Tohoku-based craft which can rejuvenate art and design in general, and we hope that the project will contribute in some way to the reconstruction of the local community affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Under the theme of “Future Craft”, students from various backgrounds are exposed to the practice and thought of Japanese craft and manufacturing, and engage in intercultural creative assignments. One of the goals of the project is that the students truly achieve a practical and theoretical understanding of global design through cooperation as an international team.
