Garakutashu: A Network for Modern Craft and Design

This exhibition celebrates the activities of Garakutashu, a society of collectors and hobbyists active in Japan from the 1920s through the 1940s. In its heyday Garakutashu had up to nearly three hundred members and was open to anyone with a passion for collecting, regardless of status, faith, nationality, or gender. Established at a time of international modernist art and folk-art movements, which made a virtue of the unconventional, the network stands out for its love of the ordinary. Members accumulated and created all manner of objects, not just artworks and fine crafts, but also memorabilia, curios, and bric-a-brac, and similar items others might overlook or even deem worthless. This exhibition features works created by society members and associates, as well as related ephemera, publications, and photographs.
To the members of Garakutashu, collecting was a means of recreation, but also as a structure for meeting with people and exchanging ideas across Japanese society. The network would become a fruitful place for artistic creation and an a rich intersection of the traditional and the modern. Garakutashu is an under-looked but fascinating chapter in the history of art, play, and internationalism in Japan before World War II.
Garakutashu: A Network for Modern Craft and Design travels to Honolulu from Japan, and was produced in collaboration with the Institute for Art Anthropology, Tama Art, which hosted the exhibition February 25–March 6, 2021.
This exhibition will be accompanied by a publication, entitled Garakutashu: A Network for Modern Craft and Design, made available through the Manoa Commons Press/John Young Museum of Art.
Organization
This exhibition was curated by Helena Čapková, Faculty of Fine Arts, Brno University of Technology. Helena Čapková is a scholar and exhibition curator active transnationally in Europe, Japan, and beyond. Her research of Garakutashu network has lasted for many years, culminating in this exhibition and its catalog, produced in collaboration with the Institute for Art Anthropology, Tama Art University, Tokyo. Supervision was done by Ando Reiji, Professor, Faculty of Art and Design, Tama Art University. Special thanks to Fujino Shigeru, whose generosity in sharing his collection made this exhibition possible.

Garakutashu: A Network of Modern Craft and Design is an exhibition that examines the networking activities of a diverse society of collectors based in Japan in the interwar years, organized in the spirit of vivid cultural and international exchange. To mark the opening of the exhibition, the Department of Art + Art History has organized a symposium to contextualize this understudied but fascinating network. Both events will take place on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, with the symposium first (3:00~4:30 PM) in Art Building room 101, followed by the exhibition opening (4:30~5:30 PM) at the John Young Museum of Art.
