We visited this garden museum, created as an environment to house the works of Isamu Noguchi.

Not only were his works amazing, but it was incredible to know that the whole space housing them, and the way they were arranged had also been planned out by him as well.

 

２０世紀を代表する彫刻家イサムノグチの庭園美術館を訪れました。

イサムノグチによる彫刻作品の独特で洗練された形状や、彼が実際に制作を行っていた豊かな自然環境にとても刺激を受けました。

We visited the memorial gallery for George Nakashima, a Japanese - American designer.

His designs worked with the natural beauty of the materials he used, while paying close attention to fine details. In this gallery we were able to view, and also to interact with some of his works. We were impressed by how his designs seemed to incorporate the best of Japanese and American design. A group photo taken in seated in his chairs was the perfect end to the day.

 

日系アメリカ人の家具デザイナー、ジャージナカシマの記念館を訪れました。

自然を生かしつつも細部まで工夫されて洗練されたデザインの家具を鑑賞し、日本とアメリカの価値観が融合したデザインを学びました。最後はジョージナカシマがデザインした椅子に座って記念写真を撮りました。

We visited the Benesse House Museum on Naoshima.

The building itself was designed by Tadao Ando especially to showcase the large number of modern artworks inside. The harmony between the many site-specific installations and the architecture was truly impressive.

 

現代美術作品を多く所蔵しているベネッセハウスミュージアムを訪れました。アーティスト達がその場所のために制作したサイトスペシフィックな美術作品が多く展示されていて、直島の自然と芸術作品との調和を感じました。

As we travelled through Naoshima we had the opportunity to visit a number of the houses which have been repurposed through the Art House Project.

Scattered throughout the island, these 7 houses were older Japanese style homes which were repurposed as art works. These homes house the works of a number of artists, but they also exist as artworks in their own right. Several teams were especially inspired by James Turrell's work Minamidera, an art house which used our perception of light and dark to create an entirely new experience.

 

直島本村地区で展開されているアートプロジェクト、家プロジェクトを見に行きました。

昔のままの町並みを残す本村地区を歩きながら、現代美術の作家達によって空間そのものが作品化された古民家７軒を巡りました。古民家と先端技術を使用した現代美術などの融合に驚きました。安藤忠雄とジェームズ・タレルによる作品である「南寺」の微かな光と闇の関係にインスピレーションを受けたチームもいました。

We visited the Chichu museum, which was designed by Tadao Ando.

The harmony between architecture in the spaces where works by Claude Monet, James Turrell, and others were on display was truly inspiring. We were also lucky enough to attend a viewing of the Open Sky program, where the sunset was framed by light designed by James Turrel.

 

安藤忠雄が設計した地中美術館を鑑賞しました。

クロード・モネによる絵画が展示された部屋や、ジェームズ・タレルの作品「オープン・フィールド」など、空間全体で魅せる様な作品群に強くインスピレーションを受けました。

日没時にはジェームズ・タレルの作品であるオープンスカイのナイトプログラムにも参加し、日没につれて変わる空の色と作品との融合に感動しました。
