We visited the Golden Pavilion, a famous traditional Japanese building.

Unfortunately we were greeted by rain, but we were still impressed by the exquisite detailing in the building, and the irpples on the surface of the pond.

 

歴史的建造物として有名な金閣寺を訪れました。

残念ながらこの日は雨でしたが、メンバー達は建造物の細かな造形や、池にできた波紋などにまで注目していました。

 

We visited Ryoan temple, famous for its Hojo rock garden.

Several teams were deeply inspired by the power of the wave like patterns in the garden.

We were also able to eat boiled tofu, a specialty of the area.

 

枯山水の方丈石庭で有名な龍安寺を訪れました。

方丈石庭の波紋が広がっていくような造形に強くインスピレーションを受けたチームもいました。

また、最後に名物の湯豆腐をメンバー全員で食べました。

We were led in Zazen (Zen Meditation) in the Daitoku temple.

Our hosts were kind enough to take us on a special tour of a tearoom designed by Senno Rikyu, master of the tea ceremony, and we had a chance to receive tea and the local natto delicacy from our hosts afterwards.

 

大徳寺で座禅の体験をしました。

今回は特別に非公開の茶室などにも案内していただき、細部まで意味やこだわりを持って作られた茶室にみんな興味津々でした。

最後には抹茶やお茶菓子、名物の大徳寺納豆もご馳走になりました。

We took a tour of the Hiyoshiya Wagasa shop that makes and sells Japanese traditional umbrellas.

We were lucky enough to be able to visit their workshop as well, and to see the process by which these umbrellas are carefully made by hand.

It was very interesting to hear an explanation of how Japanese umbrellas are made.

 

日本の伝統的な和傘を製造販売している日吉屋和傘ショップを見学しました。

工房の中も案内していただき、実際に和傘を制作している所を間近で見学しました。

和傘の構造まで詳しく説明していただき、とても勉強になりました。

We took a tour of the showroom of Eriko Horiki, a washi designer.

Her designs carry on the traditions of washi, but they also break new ground, and challenge perceptions of washi. We were especially impressed by 3D lights created from washi. Our timing proved to be good, when were were able to meet Ms. Horiki and ask her questions in person.

 

和紙デザイナーの堀木エリ子さんのショールームを見学しました。

斬新で独創的なデザインでありながら伝統を受け継いだ和紙や、立体に造形された和紙の照明に驚きました。

また、堀木エリ子さんご本人にも直接お会いしてお話しをいただき、質疑応答など貴重な機会になりました。

We visited the Kyoto Design House, a store for specially selected interesting deigns, which is housed in the Niwaka Building.

Many of the items there used traditional techniques or materials from Kyoto, which were being used in new and interesting ways. The building itself was another work by Tadao Ando.

 

デザインセレクトショップの京都デザインハウスを訪れました。

京都の伝統的な素材や技術を使用しつつ、デザインにも優れた商品を多く見ることができました。

また、このお店が入っている俄ビルは安藤忠雄が設計したものです。

We visited the Zohiko Urushi museum where many different urushi lacquerware items were on display.

Of special interest were examples of wooden objects before urushi was applied, and extravagantly detailed items accented with gold leaf. One team was inspired by the depth of the dark urushi gloss.

 

日本の伝統工芸である漆を使用した食器などの展示販売を行っている象彦漆ミュージアムを訪れました。

漆を塗る前の木製の器や、金箔を使用した繊細な器など、漆器専門店ならではの物が多くあって興味深かったです。

漆の深い黒色にインスピレーションを受けたチームもいました。

We visited The Fushimi Inari Shrine, the head shrine of all Inari shrines in Japan.

A long winding paths through 1,000 tori gates was designed to seem as if the same path were repeating over and over again though infinity.

While the climb up was hard, we had fun climbing together - marveling at the shrine and enjoying our time there.

 

全国にある稲荷神社の総本宮である伏見稲荷大社を訪れました。

起伏を繰り返す特殊な地形の作りで千本鳥居が永遠に続くような錯覚を覚え幻想的な気持ちになりました。

上り坂がきつく、休み休みでしたがメンバー達は鳥居の数を数えたりしながら楽しく登っていました。

We visited Hosoo textile studio, of the Moden Nishijinori company.

The beautiful brocade fabrics produced by this studio had an amazing sense of weight and beauty in each piece.

Their collaborations with a wide range of different designers are opening the door for new opportunities using their new techniques.

 

先進的な西陣織の会社、細尾テキスタイルスタジオに見学に行きました。

伝統的な西陣織を使った新しいデザインの家具など、伝統と現代的なデザインとが融合した新しい表現を学びました。
