Lee Hyelim’s solo exhibition [Captured Disappearance], which has been working on the thought of time through the materiality of paper, will be held at the Materiaux Gallery from October 26. This exhibition aims to convey the artist’s attitude toward multi-layered and relative time through the artist’s perspective, which compares the attribute of paper, which is completed by stacking and compressing layers of raw materials, to the way the stratum is formed.
Paper, which forms a solid plane by stacking pulp, paper mulberry, and various raw materials and applying pressure, is recognized by the artist as a three-dimensional knitted fabric made by intertwining numerous memories and time. Completed through sewing with more than 40 pieces of colorful paper and intersecting with colorful threads, “Tsuzuku (continued)” reveals considerations of diversity in life and conveys a three-dimensional sense of time as if several tense coexists within a single screen.
“Kankonshi”, which is made into a new type of paper by mixing fragments of old books that are difficult to decode, leaves traces of passing through the act of sewing based on the imagination of the past seen in the physical properties of the paper itself, which is an act of self-identification by leaving a trace of the passing times. Matière, which is combined by intersecting fragments of papers of various origins from different times, is unpredictable and accidental as it meets the moisture and temperature at the moment it is made by the artist’s fingertips.
“Sequence”, which aims to express the mixture of individual diversity and time* through pillar images with different lengths and thicknesses by hand tearing and sewn thousands of sheets of paper, shows the continuous temporality of accumulation and stretching at the same time, which directly reveals the artist’s work process of finding relief in the expression of shape through action as a result of visualizing the time used according to the absolute total amount of labor used for work.
As a result of tactile paper, the lines of atypical and free rhythm that are performed together are the result of having a center as an act itself within the process of working as if listening to faint and difficult to hear. The expression of a shape that appears like hard and light smoke seems to be the marks that are left confirming the self in the world of physical properties to recognize the multilayer depth of time. The artist’s attitude of saying that he creates and empties it is in the process of catching an image that seems to pass by and touching his hand to find a place, and it is an expression of the will to continue the temporal permanence of nature.
